A unit labeled only "230V" should be fed 230V, and one labeled only "208V" should be fed 208V.

Dual-rated 208/230V units are common in larger reach-ins, walk-in systems, and many ice machines. The plug is typically a NEMA 6-20 or 6-30, or the unit is hardwired. Before buying, note whether the spec sheet says 208/230V (dual-rated) or a single voltage, and match it to the circuit you actually have.

Three-Phase Power

Three-phase service is the workhorse of commercial buildings and is required by the largest refrigeration equipment: walk-in condensing units of 1 horsepower and up, large modular ice machines, and big blast chillers.

Three-phase units are available in 208V and 230V (and 460V for very large systems) and must be hardwired or connected through a proper disconnect — you cannot plug one into a wall outlet.
